A Moment with the Lilies

"Consider the lilies of the field and learn thoroughly how they grow; they neither toil nor spin."

Our day-to-day worries are simple yet we toil over them because at their root, the worries all come down to this:

Who am I? Why am I here?

What should I do? What should I be?

The lilies of the field don't have brains, nervous systems, hormones. I know that. You know that. Jesus knows that.

Yet, he still says, "consider...they neither toil nor spin."

So many times I've read this verse and thought "Of course not. Lilies are not people. They don't have any cares." They just push out threw the ground, grow towards the sun and when the time comes, they burst into beautiful blooms.

You see, it's not about their lack of humanness that He is highlighting. It is that our Father God provides for them in every way possible. This is actually profound because those flowers -- they probably weren't lilies like you and I are thinking -- weren't created in His image. They weren't made for a relationship with Him or to be His children.

But, we are.

And, so if Father God makes simple flowers beautiful and also provides everything they need to grow and bloom, what more does He make, give and do for us?

Lilies don't get to choose. They just bloom.

But, we have a choice. We can toil and spin. Or, we can bloom. And when the Lord is our dew -- our sustenance -- we can bloom as effortlessly as the lilies. That's what Hosea 14:5 implies.

"Bloom like the lilies."
